Motorola’s sleek D812 twin phones are easy to set up and allow you to upload your mobile-phone numbers from your SIM card and send and receive text messages from mobiles. For the green-minded, they also have an eco-mode, which uses less battery power. The only downside is that they need to charge for 24 hours before use.

Verdict: Not cheap, but will delight the mobile-phone generation.

One fo the best-value cordless phones on test.  It has a range of useful features, including texting, a 50-number directory with a SIM-card reader to transfer mobile-phone contacts, a good caller display and ten different - albeit dull - ringtones.  It is easy to use with decent-sized dialling buttons and a large comfortable earpiece.

Verdict: Excellent all-rounder
